My Story
I
have been canoeing for about 30 years, for me it's a way to enjoy fishing, nature, and time away from the hustle and bustle of life. From my earliest days with the canoe, I saw the cartopping and portage part as a necessary evil. Although I can wrestle the canoe up onto the roof rack of my small pick-up, it's a struggle and a real energy waster. More often than I'd like, this maneuver results in some sort of injury to the wrist or shoulder. At one point, I simply put the canoe up, and stopped doing the thing that was like breathing to me. After one season without paddling, I realized that this was unsatisfactory. I researched all the portage carts and vehicle accessories that applied to the issue, and determined that none of those available would solve my problem.

With a background in technology and park rangering, I began experimenting and observing paddlers portage and cartop their boats. It became clear that most canoeists were simply doing these tasks the old fashioned way, struggling. Frequently, I'd see canoes sit all day on a vehicle and never wetted.

I decided that the successful canoe cart would have to do three things:

  1. Help the canoeist cartop the canoe.
  2. Roll the canoe at least short distances.
  3. Be designed in such a manner that it could remain on the canoe while paddling.

I personally build each cart to fit the individual canoe, carefully performing every operation, with quality control integral to the process. I have made P.O.Wheelees for various models of the canoe makes listed below:

  • Old Town
  • Wenonah
  • Lincoln
  • Bell
  • Nature Bound
  • Riverjammer
  • Nova Craft. and others
  • Ask about your canoe - the P.O. Wheelee can be built for canoes not listed. I will gladly discuss the possibilities with you.

Canoeists from the following states and one foreign country are using the P.O. Wheelee:

  • Washington
  • Wyoming
  • Oregon
  • Texas
  • Missouri
  • Tennessee
  • Kentucky
  • Florida
  • Maryland
  • Ohio
  • Illinois
  • Maine
  • New Hampshire
  • Vermont
  • Rhode Island
  • Massachusetts
  • Connecticut
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Wisconsin
  • Delaware
  • Switzerland

Lots of folks purchase a canoe based on what they can lift, this consideration changes dramatically if you use a P.O. Wheelee, because you're only lifting half the weight of the canoe. If you're planning a canoe purchase, I'll be glad to let you know if a P.O. Wheelee can be made for it.
